Education in the 21st Century

Comparing the learning skills required in this century with what was required many years ago will reveal new and different abilities. If students are not educated in current 21st century skills, then the economy will be in jeopardy.

What the students had been learning ten years ago, should not be required today. In this age when students are already instant messaging, we should no longer be teaching how to email properly. Adapting 21st century skills knowledge to a changing world is what we ought to be doing. The world is changing and we need to adapt 21st century skills knowledge to this changing world.

Critical thinking skills, and asking questions that require answers from several resources is what we need to focus on today.

Locating relevant accurate content is why students need to learn instead of making them learn content. If you are creating groups in your class just so that you can check on your teachers’ evaluation that you did it, then you are missing the point of doing it.

The creation of groups is to teach students how to collaborate with others. And this is not only a classroom thing, but it should be done across the globe.

The future careers are still unknown to us. We do not know where they will be or their job description. Being a critical thinker, a problems solver with global awareness is what 21st century skills require.

We should let students use skills that help them understand the changing technology environment like social networking and contribution to the development of intellectual texts, each day.

Engaging our students in this adapting changing world is important. There should be reality in what we do. Our students can solve a math problem from a math app in 2 seconds. It is even simple to make an essay using Google, and they can text their friends in the next class when you assigned them to do.

Understanding this concept is our job as educators. This knowledge should be used and solve a bigger problem.

If you ask a student to present their findings on a real world problem using class oral presentation skills then this cannot be easily found in YouTube.

If the oral presentation is the basis of his assessment, then he will be using a lot of skills to be able to prepare for this. The things he needs to do is to research for relevant information about the problem and determine their credibility. The he writes and edits the script. He also need to chose and sue appropriate images.

Here you implement reading, writing, and research standards, and the last one that is difficult to reach is oral presentation.

The priority of educators then is to teach that will prepare them for the future.
